Club Deportivo Palestino’s banned jersey

On January 4th, 2014, one of the greatest milestones in the history of Club Deportivo Palestino began. At the first match of the 2013-2014 Clausura Tournament of Chile’s First Division, when Palestino beat Everton 4-0, with 3 goals from Roberto Gutiérrez (1), the teams’s leaders, together with Roberto Abusada, owner of the sportswear manufacturer Training Profesional, wanted an innovate  new jersey design, which replaced the number ‘1’ with a map of Historic Palestine (present-day Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories that lasted until 1947) (2), a country that, at the time the club was founded, both Jews, Christians and Muslims coexisted within its limits in a peaceful way.

Introduction

This article aims to elucidate how Club Sportivo Palestina originated, as possibly one of the first sports and social institutions of the Palestinian community in Chile, and how it became in its short existence an organization. To understand its development, it is necessary to delve into the context that allowed the arrival of Palestinians to Chile and the importance of the Balfour Declaration as a fundamental milestone that marks the development of both the Palestinians in their homeland, and as well as the Palestinian community in Chile.

Historical Context

Club Deportivo Palestino, from its professional history, has only obtained the Chilean league championship twice: In 1955 and 1978.

For a contemporary thing, a whole generation has engraved in their minds the revolutionary coach Caupolicán Peña and ‘Don Elias’ Figueroa in defense. But it is difficult to find fans who have lived through the 1950s era. When Palestino won the 1955 championship in an overwhelming way, winning by more than 10 points difference (when 2 points were added per game won). Several players stood out from that team, one of them was the great Roberto ‘Muñeco’ Coll, a legend of the team that played until the age of 43 before retiring, and who is the best foreign player who has played for the Chilean league. Apparently, nobody says anything about the coach. This is the reason, why we took on the mission to research more about this enigmatic figure.

Club Deportivo Palestino has become a focal point for tensions between Santiago’s sizeable Arab and Jewish communities

In Patronato, a poor quarter of Santiago, the Palestinian community meets at the Beit Jala cafe. It’s just a step away from San Jorge, Chile’s oldest orthodox church founded by the first Palestinian migrants in 1917. Here the elders sip their coffee and savour oriental pastries. The walls are covered with photographs of Beit Jala, the village from where most of the Palestinians in Chile originated.

Colo-Colo claimed the Chilean Championship for a record 28th time after beating Palestino 3-1 at the Estadio Monumental de Santiago. The Chilean giants continued their domination of recent years…

Colo-Colo proved that they are the most dominant club in Chile, after claiming the Clausura Championship with a 3-1 victory over Palestino. It was Colo Colo’s 28th title triumph, and their fifth of the past six seasons.

Palestino, who played with nine men from the 50th minute, drew 1-1 with Colo Colo in the first leg of the final of the Chilean Clausura Championship at the Estadio Nacional de Santiago.

Article N°5: Palestina Sport Club, the golden age of tennis

Note: This is the article Nº5 about the historical research about Club Deportivo Palestino for the project ‘4 Colores’

Previously it was said that Club Deportivo Palestino, after having participated between 1921 and 1923 in the youth championship of the Football Association of Santiago, and having retired from competition for finding a hostile environment in Chilean society, chose for focusing their energies on playing tennis, because it is a less contact sport and more of a gentleman’s game. (1)

Indeed, during those years it was called ‘Palestina Sport Club’ or ‘Palestina Sporting Club’, on the style of tennis club names.
